Tales are more enjoyed if they are written with emotions and realistic approaches. Satyajit Rai is known as an institution for art lovers all around the world. His tales are known to have everything that has attracted and will continue to allure people with sense of aesthetics. Netflix recently released Ray, an anthology featuring 4 different stories. Hungama Hai Kyon Burpa, Spotlight, Forget Me Not and Behurupiya. Every short film is directed by a different director, and offer an hour long run-time.

Set around the backdrop of a few Muslim characters living in India, Hungama Hai Kyon Barpaah is written with finesse. The command over Urdu language is beautifully expressed even in the shortest of dialogues. The winner of this short story is hands down the script; it’s tight, edgy, witty and smart with strong bursts of emotions. Manoj Bajpai as Raju/Musafir Ali is a delight to watch. He reminds his viewers that he is rightly one of the “Mumbai Kay Cinema Ka King”. There were a few glimpses of his first, Satya. Bajpai’s looks, mannerism, pauses and wit are all well expressed and handled aptly. Gajraj Rao is another actor who adds weight to the short film with his spontaneous and realistic performance. He emotes with depth and his frustration, greed and helplessness are all evident through his facial expressions. Raghuvir Yadav is the surprise package, in just a 3 minute long scene, he delivers something that will entertain every viewer irrespective of age. Yadav’s dialogue delivery makes his small appearance a memorable one. Manoj Pahwa also delivers his part well.

The story revolves around two passengers who have things in common (not going to spoil the fun). The narrative is well built and decently executed. Direction wise, Abhishek Chaubhey excels and gives a masterstroke.

There are a few scenes where justice with the diction falters when viewers listen to words like “Aagaaz” instead of “Aaghaaz” and “Hakim” instead of “Hakeem” and a few others. All in all, Hungama Hai Kyon Barpaah is a highly recommended short story that also features Ghulam Ali’s ghazal with the same title.
