Coolie No. 1 – An Oblivious Tribute To Govinda
There are no brownie points for guessing the storyline of David Dhawan’s recreation of Coolie No. 1 with his son Varun Dhawan. The story is ditto but the disappointing part is that besides the story, dialogues, scenes and accents are ditto to the original one. So the creative liberty took the back seat. Besides 15 to 20 percent, Coolie No. 1 (Two point O) is exactly was Coolie No. 1 (Bollywood original) was.
There must be a huge responsibility on Varun Dhawan’s shoulders to outdo the Entertainer No. 1 of his time (Govinda). And this must be the reason why Varun actually copied Govinda’s mannerism, performance, and dialogue delivery and (also) pauses in the entire film. Varun has worked really hard and with great dedication in his brief career but limiting himself to ‘copy’ someone else is a tad bit disappointing. Varun has great comic timing but it’s sad how he imitated other actor and let his talent go in waste.
Sara Ali Khan is super loud (in expressions and in acting). She looks sexy, hot and chic and that’s the only thing her character demanded in the film – no substance. Paresh Rawal is a letdown, a brilliantly talented and blessed actor is supremely wasted. Imagine Paresh Rawal doing all he could to be noticed in mega boring film Himmatwala (Sajid Khan) yet in New Coolie No. 1 he hams and goes loud without substance.
Rajpal Yadav and Jaaved Jaffery are wasted too.
Coolie No. 1 two point O only proves that Varun can mimic Govida decently but original remains the original.
Writing by Farhad Samji is like he was in a phase of writing Comedy Circus acts. Graphics and CGI are amateurish.
In short, Coolie No. 1 is a tribute to Govinda and his style of cinema, where David Dhawan tried his best to recreate scenes from Haseena Maan Jayegi and songs from Sajan Chale Sasural yet miserably failed to make Varun Dhawan parody Govinda. The movie proves that it was Govinda and Kader Khan who pulled off the entire show in Coolie No. 1 (original), Varun-David jodi has a long way to go to give hits like Entertainer No.1.
