The Eid season, a crucial period for Pakistani cinema, saw an ambitious lineup of five local films this year. Among them was “Babylicious,” marking Essa Khan’s directorial debut and featuring the much-anticipated on-screen reunion of Shehroz Sabzwari and Syra Yousuf.

Essa Khan aimed “Babylicious” squarely at the younger generation, infusing it with vibrant energy and a youthful vibe. However, the film struggles to resonate beyond its promotional promises, falling short of capturing the hearts it targeted.

The narrative revolves around Omer (Shehroz Sabzwari), an aimless youth fixated on Sabiha (Syra Yousuf), whom he affectionately calls “Babylicious.” Despite her rejection and subsequent marriage to Nabeel (Ankur Rathee), Omer persists in pursuing her through misguided schemes involving friends and questionable tactics.

Shehroz Sabzwari’s performance, while occasionally convincing, fails to deliver the transformation needed for Omer’s complex character. His portrayal lacks consistency and depth, leaving the audience disconnected from his emotional journey.

Syra Yousuf, despite her talent, is underutilized in a supporting role that lacks depth and emotional resonance. Her character’s execution feels superficial, robbing Syra of opportunities to showcase her full potential.

Ankur Rathee, known for his nuanced performances, struggles with underdeveloped writing that fails to explore Nabeel’s character fully. His presence, though significant, remains unremarkable due to the script’s limitations.

“Babylicious” suffers from disjointed storytelling and unresolved plotlines, leaving the audience bewildered by its erratic narrative progression. The attempt to blend romance with superficial elements reminiscent of Bollywood classics falls flat, lacking the depth and authenticity needed to engage viewers.

The film’s climax, marked by unrealistic action and questionable character choices, adds to its overall disappointment. It fails to deliver the emotional impact expected from a romantic storyline, instead resorting to clichés that undermine its potential.

Babylicious emerges as a forgettable Eid release that fails to leave a lasting impression. Essa Khan’s directorial debut, while ambitious, lacks cohesion and compelling storytelling, missing the mark on entertainment value and meaningful performances.
