Female backed web series demand a lot of expertise in displaying the complexities of the characters that female bears. She, Choked, Leila and Delhi Crime are a few that were produced highlighting the female protagonists. We do not come across stories that tell about the hardships faced by women, how difficult things are for women when managing a domestic life upbringing kids etc. Aarya is an adaptation from the Dutch series titled Penoza. The Indian version features Sushmita Sen in titular character and along with her there are other great actors like Chandrachur Singh, Namit Das, Sikandar Kher, Jayant Kripalani, and Manish Chaudhary etc. Aarya is directed by Ram Madhvani, Sandeep Modi and Vinod Rawat. The tale unfolds the elements of law and order, business and crime in Rajasthan.

It has been witnessed that many times a good-hearted family-oriented person unknowingly gets trapped in to such circumstances where they have no other option lef but to join the cartel. Aarya is one such story of a woman named Aarya, played by Sushmita Sen. Aarya’s husband Tej (Chandrachur Singh) is shot dead in broad daylight, and her journey to find his murderer starts. With 3 kids, Aarya is both weak and has the power to move the mountain. Her kids are her weaknesses and strengths. Aarya is surrounded by friends, enemies and family. What happens next to her and her kids’ lives is what Aarya is all about.

The story of Aarya is very well layered. It loudly speaks about the motives, characters, envy, power, control and greed that people have beneath their skin. Everyone seems to be double faced and ruthless. Dialogue by Ram Madhavani and Sandeep Modi are effective and crisp at places. There are some great scenes in Aarya that are powerfully scripted and written with effective execution. The storytelling gets dragged at places, and this leaves the audience a tad bit bored.

Sushmita Sen is in brilliant form, she looks the character that is aged, elegant, royal, very much human and composed. Sadly, Sushmita Sen did not get many power packed characters earlier in her career but what she did in Samay and Aankhein, and was applauded for, she is miles ahead in Aarya. Her dialogues are well written, well performed and very much realistic too. They define her character.

Chandrachur Singh is strictly okay, he underplayed his part but at places gets a little overboard. Jayant Kripalani is first rate.

Manish Chaudhary fits the need of the character quite well and gives his best shot. Sikandar Kher has limited dialogue but his screen presence is quite strong. Namit Das is very natural and must get more films and webseries, a fine talent to look out for.

Besides all the pluses, there are minuses too. Aarya tries to engage in every episode yet the audience is distracted with twists and turns that don’t add much to the story. The element of surprise is usually the high point of such crime thrillers but in Aarya, there are places where the audience loses their interest. For the sake of binge watching and Sushmita’s pull they continue to watch the series. Adding multiple tracks without genuine grounds to excite and engage the audience result in dissatisfied experience.

If you are looking for some great performances, and are fan of Sushmita Sen then you will hopefully enjoy the Disney Hotstar Aarya. The songs from 70s and 80s included in Aarya are soothing.
