HUM TV’s Baandi Is Unusual, Experimental And Interesting

Hum TV’s latest drama Baandi grabbed my attention when I watched its promo at YouTube, to me it was kind of unusual to watch Yasir Hussain playing a baddie. Plus, from the look of it even Hina Dilpazir has something different to offer, unlike her comic experimental characters. From the trailer and teaser of Baandi, I was sure that this drama serial will ‘hopefully’ be different from the usual extra-marital affair-centered plots or the repetitive plots which are currently being aired on TV channels focused on feminism, women-schemers and over-dosage of family politics. So, finally I watched its 2 episodes and decided to write about it.

The plot of Baandi revolves, so far, around 2 families, one is settled in a village ruled by a feudal (Yasir Hussain) and the other is a family settled in the city. Baandi sheds light on how people are ruled and misused by feudal-lords, along with how high-societal white colored and reputed individuals are actually beneath their skin. The contrast is very interestingly written by Asma Nabeel. Asma proves that she has a good understanding of both the lifestyles which she talks about and showcases in her drama.

As far as Yasis Hussain’s character is concerned, it is nicely penned and perceived, plus, Yasir is looking good. His scheming and manipulative side along with his notorious shade are both remarkable. This will be a turning point in Yasir Hussain’s career, after Mutazalzal (Karachi Se Lahore series). As a 90’s kid growing up watching Pakistani dramas ardently, I can recall the notorious and terrifying character of Jahaanial Shah (played by Sohail Asghar) from Chand Grahan. Yasir Hussain is doing a tremendous job with his expressions and body movements. His is one character to look out for.

On the other hand, Hina Dilpazir’s character is also very intriguing. There are many shades in the character and the actress is doing a commendable job. Rest of the cast is gradually building up their characters.

Baandi is an interesting, unique and different drama from the lot. It is good to see something pleasantly unusual on TV screens. Direction by Syed Ahmed Kamra is effective and deserves appreciation.
