Ghabrana Nahi Hai – The Kind Of Revival Pakistani Cinema Needed

It is such a great feeling to talk about a well (thought, planned, edited and executed) movie that comes out of Pakistani Cinema. Ghabrana Nahi Hai is one of such films that the Pakistani film industry will cherish. The cast includes Saba Qamar, who is a great performer and a star that never disappoints; with her are 2 young guns who are debuting in this film, Zahid Ahmed and Syed Jibran and the cherry on top is Nayyer Ejaz who needs no introduction. The film is penned by Saqib Khan (also the director) and Mohsin Ali. Punch lines in Ghabrana Nahi Hai are seeti & clap-worthy.

Ghabrana Nahi Hai review

The story of Ghabrana Nahi Hai revolves around Zubaida (aka Zubi) who is from Faisalabad and how her father (Sohail Ahmed) is tricked by ‘Qabza Mafia’ (land grabbers) in Karachi that is a very realistic story to narrate. Zubi travels from Faisalabad to Karachi to fight for her father’s rights. Once in Karachi she meets her cousin brother Vicky (Syed Jibran), a police officer with grey shade Sikandar (Zahid Ahmed) and Bhai Miaan (Nayyer Ejaz) the land grabber. What happens next is a roller-coaster ride that offers humor, romance, sentimental emotions and a high dose of entertainment.

From the first scene to the last, this film keeps you hooked. Yes, there are some (in fact very few) scenes that can fall under the head of “Dragged scenes” but they don’t decrease the fun element that the film offers. In fact, such scenes are overshadowed by smart writing, engaging twists and very smooth editing. This film offers a complete package i.e. romance, emotional outbursts, performances to cherish and enjoy, good dialogues and decent music.

There are a few scenes where Saleem Mairaj steals the show, he is such a fine actor and it feels great when an actor like him is given characters that he deserves. There is a scene in this film that reminded me of a scene from Khosla Ka Ghosla where Boman Irani meets Naveen Nischol but the beauty of Ghabrana Nahi Hai’s scene is that it doesn’t look copied or even inspired but yes, a movie buff will definitely recall that scene “Aap Party Hain ya Broker” yaad aaya? J But the good thing is GNH’s scene is a fresh scene and very well executed = Hats off to the editor.

The title song showcases the talent of the editor, as it gives an idea of the expertise that the young boy has under his sleeves.

Performance wise, everyone stands out Saba Qamar is brilliant as Zuby / Zubaida, Syed Jibran is a sweetheart and how boys should be i.e. caring, compassionate, loving and genuine; Jibran’s emotional outburst, when he tries to calm Zuby when she cries shows his realistic acting skills and he steals the show. Zahid Ahmed is oh-so-macho and tough cookie whereas Nayyar Ejaz is a veteran who never disappoints if the character is nicely developed, written and the director is able – this time he gets it all. Nayyar Ejaz oozes terror, eccentricity, jolliness and villainous shades. Jan Rambo is perfect as Aslam Bhai!
