Aalia Bhatt is one of the finest actresses from the newer generation of Bollywood and she has proved her mettle repeatedly with films like Highway, Dear Zindagi and Udta Punjab. Zoya Akhtar, after giving thought provoking yet entertaining films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Luck By Chance, has brought the two of the most potent performers in her latest venture titled Gully Boy. 1 – Powerhouses of Performances:

Ranveer Singh plays Murad with utmost conviction, his eyes speak louder, his mannerism is on-point and he lives and breathes the character with gusto. In many scenes Singh impresses his audience and leaves them awestruck. This is definitely amongst his most difficult characters which he flawlessly performs. His composure, angst, and emotions are worth a standing ovation.

Aalia Bhat is natural and believable; she (as Safina) is remarkable in scenes where she shows sudden changes in her personality – just bravo.

Vijay Raaz as Ranveer’s father is first rate and does justice with his character. The scene where he scolds Ranveer is where he shines the most, plus in the scene where he says “Main tum se ziada chaand raatain dekhi hain” – Raaz nailed it!

The underdog of Gully Boy is hands down Siddhant Chaturvedi (as MC Sher), the debutant has immense potential and he, in many scenes, shines brighter than Ranveer Singh – and that’s the class this youngster has. Siddhant was earlier noticed in Inside Edge where he was appreciated as (Prashant Kanojia). His dialect, body language and emotions (especially when he tells Ranveer Singh about his mother) are to look out for. Zoya Akhtar gives an effortless and intense actor to Bollywood in the face of SIddhant Chaturvedi.

In Rangrezz he stood out as Pakkiya and in Gully Boy as Moeen, Vijay Varma is, in one word, Brilliant. Even he steals many scenes specially the one in the lock-up.

2 – Rap battles – intense freshness:

Those who’ve grown in 80’s and 90’s and are familiar with rappers like Baba Sehgal and Apache Indian will love the rap battles and lyrics. This culture was quite famous back in 80’s and 90’s and this film brings back memories from those times. The entire rap battle scene and finale are worth watching and listening. Lyrics are amazing and thoughtfully penned.

3 – Faultless direction and execution:

Zoya Akhtar surpasses the expectations and the way she directs the entire show is worth applauding. Akhtar manages to highlight multiple lives and their emotions with purity; she makes sure her characters rise in their respective paths. That’s the power of a good director. Gully Boy is Zoya Akhtar’s finest work so far.

4 – Bang on dialogues with astounding one-liners:

Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar jointly write Gully Boy and every dialogue is masterstroke. From lighthearted one-liners to intense and emotional dialogues every dialogue is clap-worthy. After a long hiatus, Gully Boy is one film which offers dialogues which have repeat value and sound fresh and relatable.

5 – Art of storytelling is impeccable

Gully Boy takes its audience to a world which is full of dreams, adversities, introverted souls and motivation. Keeping all the tracks on their respective paths yet so appealing and not bypassing others’ is way too commendable. From the first scene to the last, Gully Boy is thoroughly enjoyable and depicts a case study of how to tell a tale with effective props and remarkable style of storytelling.
