Chupan Chupai – Scene To Scene Copied Still Fresh & Funny
Mohsin Ali’s Chupan Chupai was in discussions for quite some time, mainly because of Neelam Munir and Ahsan Khan but the film has a little more to offer which includes Faizan Khawaja, Ali Rizvi, Vajdaan Shah, Rehan Sheikh, Jawed Sheikh and Zayed Sheikh etc. Yes, most of the names are fairly new for the film industry but have made their presence felt in dramas and theater plays. So what does Chupan Chupai has to offer to its viewers, let’s explore;
Trailer: Chupan Chupai
Chupan Chupai revolves around 3 friends who are struggling in their lives, no it’s not Pyar Ka Punchnama, they accidentally meet Babu (Ahsan Khan) a struggling and low-key kidnapper who abducts people according to his 5 golden rules of “Kednaping”. Babu gives the trio an offer to join his gang and start working for him. One thing leads to another and they end up kidnapping minister’s son Bobby (Faizan Khawaja). Bobby’s father hands over the case to SHO Chaudhary (Adnan Jaffer) – the encounter specialist. What happens next is what makes Chupan Chupai a stupidly hilarious riot.
Ahsan Khan is effective, outshines in a few scenes and looks great in the “Sadqa”. He has that chocolaty and action hero looks which make him very charming on-screen. Plus, he acts very well. Neelam Munir serves the purpose, for which she was casted at the very first place – she looks hot sexy and the eye-candy for the viewers. Her off-shoulders are appealing, when she sits mostly on Ahsan Khan’s lap there is an oomph factor attached to her. Right from her costumes to her body language she is used as a prop and masses will definitely be attracted by her.
Faizan Khawaja is the complete package; he can be the next super-star of Pakistani cinema provided he chooses characters smartly and sign good films in main lead. Rehan Sheikh is surprise package and impresses in every scene. Adnan Jaffer looks cool, and is presented as the Pakistani Sunny Deol with his power punches. Jawed Sheikh has two to three scenes and he nails them all. Wajdan, Zayed and Ali are good in their respective characters.
The script of Chupan Chupai is targeted towards the youth and youngsters will like this film. This film is a typical example of being so stupid that audience cannot help but laugh out loud. There’s no logic in the film; so don’t you dare to find any. First 35 minutes are torturous, loud and one thinks why is everyone acting so weird, but with the 40th minute the film takes interesting turns and twists which result in audience engagement. The film gets better after interval.
Mohsin Ali is a very smart guy, he knows that everyone in Pakistan watches Indian (read: Bollywood) films but most of the viewers aren’t introduced to South Indian films; so Ali got his hands on Soodhu Kavvum – a Tamil film released in 2013 and got inspired (read: copied) scenes to scene and frame to frame from it. Right from the characters to dialogues and locations to execution, Chupan Chupai is the mirror reflection of Soodhu Kavvum. It won’t be wrong to say that Chupan Chupai is the official remake/translation of Soodhu Kavvum.
The saving grace of Chupan Chupai includes Ahsan Khan’s persona, Neelam Munir’s oomph factor, Faizan’s great performance, Jawed Sheikh’s punch-lines, Rehan Sheikh’s comedy and some interesting Pakistani touches. Chupan Chupai is fresh for Pakistani masses and that’s the strength of this film despite being copied from Tamil movie.
I would have easily given Chupan Chupai 3.5 out of 5 but as it’s not an original film, and I cannot believe that Director and Writer were oblivious about Soodhu Kavvum, I’ll rate it 2.5 out of 5. Go watch Chupan Chupai, if you want to see some earnest performances from fairly new faces. Like I tweeted after watching the film at the premiere, I’ll repeat, if you liked Chennai Express and Goalmaal series then Cupan Chupai will be a total paisa wasool film for you. At the box office it will be a hit, hopefully, as it has all the ingredients of a hit film.
A NOTE FOR MOHSIN ALI:
Transparency in front of audiences will be highly appreciated if you can come out and add a disclaimer in the end credits or title that Chupan Chupai is a remake (inspired version) of Nalan Kumarasamy’s Soodhu Kavvum. This will make look Pakistani Film Industry better in the eyes of audience.
