Bappi Lahiri – The Singer, Music Composer And What Not!
Not every music composer in the Indian film industry (aka Bollywood) receives respect, love and craze from music lovers worldwide, Bappi Lahiri was one among them. The Goldie music composer was known for giving chartbusters, copying music from all parts of the world, wearing gold from head to toe, making legends like Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Shailendra and Asha Bhosle sing to his tunes, and singing songs that he thought no one would want to sing or do justice to. Bappi Lahiri was immensely inspired by Elvis Presley and this is one of the reasons why he used to wear gold.
Bappi Lahiri’s career started somewhere in 1973 but within just two years after the release of Zakhmee’s music (1975) there was no looking back. Who can forget songs like Jalta Hai Jiya Mera and Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani (from Zakhmee), Chalte Chalte Mere Ye Geet (from Chalte Chalte), Bumbayee se aaya mera dost (from Aapki Khatir) from 1975 to 1977 Bappi Lahiri proved his grip on music and instruments and then in 1976 released Suraksha that gave Bappi Lahiri another recognition for singing Gun Master G9; it became a rage. He was already making music for films without taking any break and then came the wonder year for not only Bappi Lahiri but Mithu Chakraborty; Disco Dancer released and made new records, music wise as well as business wise.
Bappi Lahiri reinvented his music consistently as he believed in embracing newness and modification in the music. His music stayed fresh from 70s till his last breath. When people thought Bappi Lahiri was only about the Disco era of 80s and couldn’t compete with the young and techno music composers of Bollywood he startled them with his music for Prem Pratigya (Pyaar Kabhie Kum Nahin Karna), Thanedaar (Tamma Tamma), Aankhein (O Laal Dupatte Waali), and so on.
