Lately, the kind of films Netflix India is showcasing is not very impressive. This probably because the competition is getting fierce with Amazon Prime, Voot and Hotstar etc. around and they are comparatively churning out better and engaging films and series. The recently released Netflix Original film is Ginny Weds Sunny. The film stars Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam as titular character i.e. Sunny and Ginny respectively. And you don’t need to find out the logic in the films as the names don’t sound logical or relatable, as mentioned in the film by Yami Gautam’s character. Puneet Khanna’s directorial debut is a romantic cum comedy film but does it hits its audience at the right place, let’s find out.

The story of Ginny Weds Sunny is a very formula based, what we call predictable and loaded with foreseeable instances. You may call it a boy-meet girl sort of bubbly romance but I call it a confused attempt to recreate scenes from multiple romantic Bollywood films. A mother trying to fix her daughter’s marriage to a guy that she thinks is suitable for her, a girl confused between which guy to select from as they both are falling on her lap and a boy who wants to get married just because he wants to pursue his dream. But unfortunately all the angles are so confusing and weakly written that they get lost even before the interval.

Ginny is headstrong and deep down there she is a bubbly girl, that’s how the character of Yami Gautam is penned but these elements don’t come out and she is seen more of an authoritative and boss-girl like. Yami does perform her part well but she doesn’t bring something new and different. Vikrant Massey is a dependable actor but it looks like his character is very much inspired by Ayushmann Khurana’s characters that he has performed in the previous films. The kind of script and dialogues remind, constantly, of Khurana’s films. Sohail Nayyar (as Nishant Raathi) is monotonous but a few of his scenes are effective.

Rajiv Gupta as Vikrant’s father and Ayesha Raza as Yami’s mother are as usual. They are type-casted and don’t bring anything different. The fact is they both are really great and natural actors but they were not given the chance and lines to justify their characters. Ginny Weds Sunny offers no surprise element. It’s way too vanilla and the wow factor is missing in the film. A huge chunk of disappointment comes from the writers of the films i.e. Sumit Arora and Navjot Gulati. It’s actually like the recollection of scenes from romantic hit films and joining them up to create a new film. And as the title suggests Ginny Weds Sunny, no matter what confusion will come in at the climax they both will marry each other.

The dramatic scenes don’t make sense and impact. The doses of emotional elements fall flat because they are not supported by logic or realistic treatment. A guy who only wanted to accomplish his dream and passion let things go so easily – is nothing but hard to swallow. The climax is so rushed and nonsensical that you cannot do anything but wonder “why Oh why?”

The film offers a superfluous, unoriginal and uninteresting story with scrawny characters with zero creativity. Ginny Weds Sunny fails to offer freshness, good music, romantic-jodi and repeat value. You can easily skip this invitation and save your time to invest in something else.
