MOM – A Must Watch For Performance Lovers

Sridevi’s MOM is one of the most anticipated films of the year for those who appreciate quality and thought provoking cinema. Besides this, MOM is also discussed for multiple reasons which include Nawaz Uddin Siddiqui’s looks and dialect, Akshaye Khanna’s (sort of) comeback and involvement of 2 Pakistani actors Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali. After English Vinglish, will Sridevi be able to create magic again on the big screen? Let’s find out.

Devki (Sidevi) is a school teacher and one day in her class Mohit, the notorious guy, sends lecherous message to Arya (Sajal), who is Devki’s step-daughter as well, knowing about the content of the message Devki throws the cellphone from the window and summons Mohit’s parents. Within next few days Arya seeks permission from her Dad Anad (Adnan Siddiqui) to go out on a Valentine’s Day Party at a farmhouse with her friends. At the party Mohit with his elder cousin and accomplice tries to get even with Arya and forcefully takes her down. Next morning Arya is discovered from a gutter and then becomes the revenge saga of a mother. What happens after the failure of judicial system and law enforcing departments is what MOM is all about. Mom is a movie which shouldn’t be missed.

Sridevi is the epitome of talent and she proves it with MOM. This is by far one of the finest and most calculated performances of Sridevi’s career. Those who thought in English Vinglish she was brilliant, MOM will be another experience for them to discover what this lady has in her. Sridevi will give you goosebumps in many scenes, to name a few there’s I.C.U. scene and hospital scene when she visits Mohit’s cousin. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is one of the finest actors in Bollywood. Nawaz is like a chameleon, this character of Dayashankar Kapoor alias D.K. in terms of appearance and dialect is hard to find in the history of Bollywood; and Nawaz has performed it with utmost dedication and command. From his movements to dialogues, Nawaz is every bit a “Class-A” actor. His entry scene is brilliantly written and impeccably performed. Watch him say “How Sweet Of You” in response to Sridevi’s “No THANK YOU”. It’s a treat to watch Nawazuddin Siddiqui as D.K.

Akshaye Khanna is effective and gives a mature performance. Adnan Siddiqui is first-rate; his helplessness in the courtroom is excellent, he leaves audience with tears when he visits the hospital. Sajal Ali is remarkable. She handles the complicated character with sheer ease and clarity. She is a talent to look out for. This will be the most apt debut of Sajal in Bollywood to gauge her performance skills. All the culprits in the film are very good. The boy playing the character of Mohit stands tall and gives great looks with needed expressions. Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh is a very talented actor and has also proved his mettle in previous films. In MOM, Singh oozes terror and abhorrence.

The script of MOM is wonderful. The dialogues are effective and leave impact. The movie however reminds of Raveena Tandon starrer Maatr a little, because of the similarity of the plot but the treatment is very different and upscale as well.

Mom is a must watch, and offers great performances with power packed dialogues and punch-lines.
