Fanney Khan – Unimpressive Lousy Attempt By Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor is one of those actors from Bollywood who have always considered as the dependable star and performer in the film fraternity. When he took a break in early 90’s and returned with Subhash Ghai’s Trimurti, he was all over the media. Anil Kapoor’s career has seen many ups and downs. Anil Kapoor’s latest venture after Race 3 is Fanney Khan, which was under discussion for quite some time, directed by Atul Manjreka. Fanney Khan has an ensemble cast of Rajkummar Rao, Aishwarya Rai, Divya Dutta, Pihu Sand and Anil Kapoor. Let’s see what the film has to offer to its audience.

Trailer Fanney Khan

Fanney Khan revolves around Prashant aka Fanney Khan (Anil Kapoor) who wanted to be a singer but because of responsibilities and bad luck he couldn’t move to the next level and became a commoner like millions others but when his wife Kavita (Divya Dutta) ave birth to Lata (Pihu Sand), Prashant decides to make her another Lata Mangeshkar (a legendary singer of India). Years pass and Pihu grows up as a bulky and fat girl with a beautiful voice but unfortunately, she is ridiculed by her physique in every audition and talent show. Prashant comes up with an idea to launch his daughter’s album on his own and for this he needs money, so he accidentally abducts the pop singing sensation Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai) and asks for Adheer’s (Rajkummar Rao) help. What happens next is what Fanney Khan is all about.

Performances wise it is Divya Dutta who is brilliant, besides a very skinny role in the film which is loaded with performers and superstars, Divya manages to deliver every single dialogue with complete grace and conviction. Divya Dutta’s expressions, concerns and emotional scenes were amazingly performed by her. Anil Kapoor gives a lousy depiction of a Hyderabadi, least relatable. Anil Kapoor has a few good scenes where he excels but if he shouldn’t come up with the Hyderabadi accent they would have been great. Pihu Sand’s character is not properly developed and she has only 2 scenes in the film where she acts well, in other places there’s nothing much to talk about.

Rajkummar Rao gives a decent performance and Aishwrya Rai is first rater as well. In fact the track between Rajkumma and Aishwarya is good (read: cute) but at the same time very limited and vanishes abruptly, there should be more of that. Satish Kaushk brings back the memories of “Bade Miyaan Chote Miyaan” with his Hyderabadi accent and he pulls it off decently as compared to Anil Kapoor. Girish Kulkarni who was last seen in Dangal and recently in Sacred Games acts well but the director fails to get the maximum out of him, his character has multiple shades and they could have been shot well.

The story of Fanney Khan is weak and impractical, it leaves audience either with so many questions or with the thought of “how’s this even possible”. The way the film progresses it gets lousy and very lengthy which make audience lose their concentration and they yawn in many scenes. Direction wise, Atul Manjrekar’s Fanney Khan is mediocre.

Fanney Khan - Movie Review Mediamagick 21

Anil Kapoor and Aishrarya Rai’s Fanney Khan is a total disappointment for those who knew the potential of both of these actors; it’s a weak script with weaker rationality and forced emotions.
