Amitabh Bachchan – Clash With On-Screen Titans
Amitabh Bachchan is from the time when filmmakers in Bollywood used to make multi-hero films and had a formula which always worked. This gave Amitabh Bachchan opportunity to act with numerous (almost all) superstars and leading actors of that era (heroes) including Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Khanna, Rajinikant and many others. Post Zanjeer (1973), Amitabh Bachchan has always been given characters which overshadow other co-stars; and Amitabh always stood taller than them in most of the films.
Years passed, but still Amitabh Bachchan is still in a position where he is ruling the Bollywood. from “Angry Young Man” to “Star of the Millennium”, Bachchan bears so many titles that it’s hard to even recall all. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it’s every actor’s ultimate wish to share screen with ‘Big B’ and leave an impact no matter how big or small the character they are offered. Following are a few films in which Amitabh Bachchan was paired with the top-most and most celebrated heroes of their time; what happened to those films, let’s find out.
Recalling 11 Films Of Amitabh Bachchan
#1: With Rajesh Khanna in Namak Haram – 1973
Hrishikesh Mukherjee casted Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna in 1971’s classic Anand, where Khanna played the lead role and he was the superstar then. Just after 2 years in 1973, Hrishikesh Mukherjee again casted the duo in Namak Haram and everyone was surprised with the way Amitabh Bachchan showcased his comic timings, emotional bursts and expressions. Bachchan was a revelation. Critics gave equal weight to Bachchan as compared to the superstar Rajesh Khanna. Right from then Big B never looked back and faced every titan of Bollywood with utmost ease and conviction.
#2: With Dilip Kumar In Shakti – 1982
Ramesh Sippy’s Shakti is considered as one of the Bollywood classics. Shakti had 3 ruling actors from that era Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. This was the very first film when Amitabh faced the ‘Tragedy King’ Dilip Kumar. And hands down Dilip Kumar overshadowed Bachchan very easily. It doesn’t mean that Amitabh didn’t perform well in the film but one can say that Dilip Kumar had an edge over Amitabh in the form of great script and dialogues, seniority card which made him shine in his character and the expressions for which Kumar was known largely.
Interesting fact: The character of Amitabh Bachchan ‘Vijay’ was earlier offered to Raj Babbar.
#3: With Govinda In Bade Miyan Chote Miyan – 1998
In the 90’s, Govinda and David Dhawan Jodi was on a roller-coaster of giving back to back super-duper hits to Indian Cinema. Amitabh was in the phase of making a comeback and in that phase he did many movies (like Mrityudaata, Lal Baadshah, Sooryavansham, and Hindustan Ki Kasam) but they all failed miserably at the box office. It’s said that David Dhawan’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan gave a bounce to Big B’s career because it was the only hit which he enjoyed after recurrent flops. This was the second time Govinda was seen sharing screen with Bachchan, their first was Hum (1991). But this time Govinda totally nailed it and he was adored and appreciated by masses and classes over Amitabh Bachchan. The film was a huge success.
Interesting fact: At one point Amitabh was hesitant to continue with Bade Miyan Chote but David Dhawan assured him that the film will do great.
#4: With Nana Patekar In Kohram – 1999
Mehul Kumar was one of the weakest directors and made films which never had interesting or engaging plot but he was always smart enough to cast good actors who managed to save their films based on their performances. Similar thing happened when he casted Bachchan with Nana Patekar who was giving back to back successful films where he, as an actor was hugely appreciated with the experimentation. After giving films like Yashwant, Ghulam-e-Mustafa, Hu Tu Tu and Khamoshi, Nana Patekar embraced another unusual character. In Kohram, Amitabh and Nana both were given equal importance and that’s the only beauty of the movie. Both the actors tried to do something different and were liked by their fans. The film didn’t do well at the box-office i.e. as expected.
#5: With Shaharukh Khan In Mohabbatein – 2000
Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein, for the first time featured Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan face to face. The hype was magnanimous; many people compared Dilip / Amitabh from Shakti to Amitabh / SRK in Mohabbatein. The movie did awesome at the box office. Both, SRK and Bachchan were given solid dialogues, impactful scenes and power-packed treatment.
Interesting Fact: SRK didn’t even see the script of Mohabbatein and signed it.
#6: With Manoj Bajpai In Aks – 2001
In Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra’s Aks, Amitabh Bachcan was given the meatier character but also had Manoj Bajpai, who was earlier hugely applauded by critics in films like Tamannah, Satya and Shool. There were just a few scenes between Amitabh and Bajpai but Bajpai impressed viewers with his performance. Later, Manoj Bajpai shared screen with Bachchan again in Aarakshan (2011) and Satyagarah (2013); in both the films he was superb as well, against Amitabh Bachchan.
#7: With Sanjay Dutt in Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin – 2002
Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan worked in Reshman Aur Shera when Dutt was a child artist, years later David Dhawan casted Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan together in his film Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin. The film bombed at the box office but Sanjay Dutt’s character got more mileage as compared to Big B’s. Sanju overshadowed Bachchan in many scenes.
Interesting Fact: Salman Khan was the first choice for Ajay Devgan’s character and Karishma Kapoor for Aishwariya Rai’s.
#8: With Akshay Kumar in Aankhen – 2002
Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s Ankhen featured Amitabh in a negative shade and Akshay Kumar in a heroic one. The film was largely liked by the masses and Akshay Kumar had some really amazing scenes opposite Amitabh Bachchan where they both don’t actually speak any dialogue but play with expressions. Amitabh and Akki were both in their finest forms in Ankhen.
Interesting Fact: For the character of Arjun Rampal, first Salman Khan and then Akshaye Khanna were considered.
#9: With Irrfan Khan In Piku – 2015
Although Shoojit Sircar’s Piku was based on father-daughter relationship played by Amitabh and Deepika Padukone but Irfan Khan also had a pivotal character in the film. Irfan faces Big B in quite a few scenes in Piku and he nails them with utmost ease and conviction. It was a treat to watch two amazing actors in Piku. Both the actors were given with good script and scenes, and they both excelled in their respective characters.
#10: With Nawazuddin Siddiqui In Te3n – 2016
Amitabh Bachchan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui worked for the first time together in Te3n. The film was a remake of Montage. Amitabh Bachchan gave a decent performance in the film whereas the character of Nawazuddin Siddiqui had nothing much to offer, due to half-baked character sketch of Siddiqui he couldn’t get to flex his performance much in the film.
Interesting Fact: Initially Naseeruddin Shah was considered for the character of Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
#11: With Aamir Khan in Thugs Of Hindostan – 2018
Just like the hype created in Shakti and Mohabbatein, audience was super excited to watch Amitabh with Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan. But unfortunately because of lousy script, mediocre storytelling and a below average package, Thugs of Hindostan failed to made an impact. There weren’t powerful scenes between Bachchan and Khan and the way most of their scenes were penned and executed fall miserably flat.
Amitabh Bachchan is amongst those actors who are still giving severe and serious competition to youngsters and is a firm believer of Raj Kapoor’s saying “The Show Must Go On”.
